Plant Care
How do I water my carnivorous plants?
If the soil is not humid, water with rainwater or purified/distilled water. If sealed completely, some plants can last without watering for several years. Our first plant was only watered once in 5 years.
What about standing water for Nepenthes vs Sarracenia?
For Nepenthes, avoid standing water in the pot otherwise the roots may rot. Sarracenia can handle standing water as they live in wetlands.
What if moss grows too tall?
We recommend quarterly plucking of moss and cleaning of windows with purified water and a cloth or paper towel. The paper towel could be wrapped around a fork or chopsticks to make it easier to reach down.
What are the temperature requirements?
Nepenthes should not be exposed to less than 10°C. Avoid high temperatures above 30°C and direct sunlight.
Do I need to feed my plants flies?
Not needed. Both Nepenthes and Sarracenia evolved pitchers separately — Nepenthes grow on trees where nutrients may be scarce, and Sarracenia live in wetlands where water can wash out nutrients. Catching animals can provide essential nutrients in these environments. However, our soil contains sufficient nutrients so the plants can pursue a vegetarian lifestyle.
Windows too foggy?
Purchase a Jar air conditioning unit — it will cool the jar using peltier effect in a specific spot so all the water will condense there and keep the glass clear of water droplets.
